USA Still Pushing Hard for 2018 Cup

September 29th, 2007 | By: Carter Daly | 3 Comments »

Gulati preaches about the possibility of the 2018 cup comming to America.

I think, and it is increasing every day, that this country is more and more ready to embrace the World Cup than ever before. We were a brilliant host country in ‘94, but we were sort of just there to provide the stadiums. I am not downplaying that turning point in American soccer history, just that in this era, we will really be able to use it to its fullest advantage to the point where are national team could challenge for it on home soil, every country’s dream.

Well keep pushing for it because I don’t think it will be in the US soil, especially that a lot of countries hates the US, I think it will either be in Latin America or Europe.

Whether or not the World Cup is awarded to the USA will have nothing to do with whether or not “x” hates the USA. In 2014, the world cup is expected to be in South America and so far the frontrunner, and the only bidder, is Brazil. If FIFA keeps its current practice of rotating the Tournament not only to different continents but also hemispheres, then the 2018 will most likely not be on this side of the world. However, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has made contradictory statements regarding this matter. In April 2007, Blatter told The Times that the 2018 World Cup would probably ‘go to Asia’ to keep with FIFA’s rotation system. But Blatter did tell ESPN in February, 2007 that the 2018 World Cup “should be in North America” where the USA, Mexico and Canada would be among the favorites to host. If the latter is the case, then the USA may not be awarded the Tournament because it will have only been 24 years since it first hosted the Cup. Countries that have hosted the Tournament more than once, and only Italy and France have done so, didn’t get their second hosting duties until over half a century later. You could make an argument that Germany hosted it twice but officially the first time the host was West Germany.
