USA Will Play In Copa America. It’s Official

October 30th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 4 Comments »

It’s on. US Soccer have accepted the invitation to play in the 2007 Copa America.

Best news ever.

“We are delighted to be able to accept the offer to play in Copa America,” said El Presidente Gulati. “The tournament offers the dual advantage of quality opponents and a challenging environment that will provide long-term benefits for our team. In order to continue our progress at the international level, it is critical that we are able to expose our team to competition at the highest level.”

Damn straight. I’m also willing to idly speculate that the timing of this decision (coming just after confirmation that Gulati and Klinsmann have been talking) is no coincidence. My guess is that Klinsi wanted some serious tournament football, and now he’s going to get it.

Roll on June 2007, where US fans will get to enjoy the Gold Cup (which should be more challenging if we have to send a weakened squad) swiftly followed by the USA’s first Copa America since 1995.

Color me excited! I hope the games are televised here in the northern half of the western hemisphere.

I’m glad it’s happening right after the Gold Cup, so we can get the team playing together (and hopefully building that chemistry) during the Gold Cup.

Work out the kinks, so to speak, so that we can bring a competitive team down there.

US has nothing to loose in playing in the same bracket as Argentina & has everything to gain. Remember the 2006 World Cup US game against Italy- Final score 1-1. In my opinion we should have one that game, but there will be many more World Cups to watch. I can’t wait to watch US match them selves up to a team like Argentina- In the 2006 World Cup- Mexico lost to Argentina in the 3rd overtime. US has been beating Mexico on a regular basis now- hope they meet us in the Gold Cup Finals. Also, the US team just beaten Denmark (a very good World Cup contender) 3-1..

I say go get’em US.
