MLS Players on the Rise

June 27th, 2008 | By: Carter Daly | 3 Comments »

In honor of the MLS season heating up, and a somewhat lengthy period of time off for the USA men, let’s look at some domestic players who may be worthy of a call depending on schedules and injuries and the like.

Kenny Cooper-> Thank you, Captain Obvious. I know I know… But FrankenCooper has been keeping the goals rolling. A total of 8 after last night’s header in the Texas Derby on ESPN2. It will be interesting to see if he keeps this form up and is able to leap frog the more experienced Ching in the forward pool. I think he should. Clearly more skilled on the ball and still young.

Edson Buddle-> I chronicled him a little while ago, but he’s still doin’ it. Put him right behind Coop on the list of MLS forwards to get a call. Looks to have good chemistry with his club mate Landon Donovan as well. Maybe they could work a little magic together on the international stage as well…

Seth Stammler-> Ok, stay with me here as we make a little migration towards the left field foul post. Seth Stammler has been arguably one of the most impressive and consistent central midfielders in MLS this year. If you haven’t seen any of him, he would fit into one of the two central midfield roles at the base of the “empty bucket”. I would even say he has been more impressive than Ricardo Clark, who constantly gets call ups. With Michael Bradley absolutely gassed, as well as having an impending transfer on the way and a new club to get acclimated to, Seth Stammler would be a nice domestic option for a qualifying call up.

Matt Reis-> I know we already have are token MLS keeper in Brad Guzan on most of the rosters, but Matt Reis has been dominating MLS this year. A flat out better keeper than Guzan all season long. Don’t be surprised to see a move abroad if he keeps this up. Just another great option in net.

Bobby Boswell-> Seems to have had a little resurrection out in Houston this year. Been pretty rock solid at the back and a large part of Houston’s recent climb back up the table. Could be a nice MLS option in the backline somewhere along the qualifying road.

Who have you seen in MLS that may warrant a call up in qualifying?

There Are Better players out There The Mens National team needs
to Keep Looking inside the US outside MLS.
Signed concerned with the ODP and natinal team System

Also we need to look at fixing our quality of play in the mid
field we have players that can play center midfield that can
control the ball and not give it away, and need to train for speed
I think w could play a well as the Russians if we traind for
speed, and agility

I like FrankenKenny. Guy is a monster. Ha! Anything to keep EJ, Wolff, Rolfe, Gavin, and Twellman off the pitch. What happened to Mapp? I thought he looked all right when Bradley gave him a shot.
By the way, can someone tell Bob that Frankie Hejduk is not the right back of the future? The guy will be 104 by 2010, and he CAN NOT cross the ball.
