Neven Subotic Garnering Old Lady Interest… What’s His Nationality Again?

Today, the always reputable Tribal Football ran a story stating that Italian giants Juventus have an interest in signing “American” center back Neven Subotic, even after he just inked up with Borussia Dortmund for five years.
I suppose this would be a lot more interesting had this Bundesliga standout actually decided what his nationality was by now. Seriously I have had enough of these triple citizenships that the USSF has to fight over, and I do not care where your grandparent’s uncle’s monkey’s cousin is from. You are what you are. This is one confused kid, highlighted by the fact that he donned cornrows in the preseason this year (see top left corner).
Now, I am not saying what exactly Subotic is. He grew up in the United States from 1999 on and was capped for the U-17’s and U-20’s. All I’m saying is at one point he must have considered himself enough of an American to go out and be in the nation’s elite youth programs. Now he’s just saying that he isn’t an American anymore? At least in traitor Rossi’s case, he was brainwashed to think he was Italian from the beginning. In the situation of Subotic, he is or could be essentially trying to flip his nationality after seeing there was “better” out there in terms of options. Lame.
Things on the Subotic front haven’t sounded good lately. It used to just be a battle between the good ole’ Stars n’ Stripes, Bosnia and Herzegovina (ha ha), Serbia (ha), and Croatia. A winnable match up for sure. But after Subotic was (somehow) snubbed from a Thomas Rongen US U-20’s camp which eventually left him off of the U-20 World Cup Roster in ‘07, he has had a bad taste in his mouth when it comes to playing for the USA. Now to make things worse, and make my head that much closer to exploding onto my 1970’s World Map that hangs above my desktop which (in some capacity) contains all of his potential destinations, apparently the German national team has become interested in the services of our boy Neven. And he seems to like that idea very much.
No, he’s not German. He works in Germany. Somehow through a naturalization process down the road this young American could be donning the colors of Deutschland in international play. Doesn’t really seem right now does it?
Neven is only 19 now, and has until his 21st b-day to man up and make his decision on which country he intends to represent in international competition. With his hot start in the Bundesliga coupled with German interest, let’s just say it doesn’t look good right now.
Viva Michael Parkhurst!

if i was Neven i would pick germany or croatia, usa suck why play for a crap team.
rossi is not a traitor. according to italian laws his italian by birth. you people should know that, if one of your parents is foreign you will gain one of your parents nationality(not culture, don’t get confuse) by birth. rossi mum and dad are both italian born his italian.
stop being a hypocrite, the world doesn’t revolve around united states, people have free will to do what ever they want.

F**k Subotic. I’m tired of hearing about this little douchebag.

First off, Italian laws??? Why do you think it’s Italian law?? If you are born somewhere and grow up in that country shouldn’t you be that nationality?? Your a traitor if you don’t… Look at the 08 olympics. Chris Kaman (an American born in Michigan) joined the Germany national basketball team??? Becasue his dead great grandparents were German. Thats retarded and what I call a traitor just like Rossi…
Sh!t, I’m going to go see if I can make Scotland, England, German, etc… national team in whatever… I feel my great great great great gandparents uncle would be proud of me figure skating for Scotland in the next winter games…
This is all a big joke, have some pride about where your from people!!!
With that being said Subotic should be playing for Bosnia and Herzegovina…

Michel, you’d have a point if both of those players hadn’t grown up in the United States. Neither of these players have the more acceptable excuse someone like Podolski has. There’s also the idea that given the amount of talent in Germany and Italy these players would be better off playing for the United States because there’s a much higher percentage chance of them actually getting to play (you’ll notice Sacha Klejstan is not attempting to break into the Croatian starting XI). Forgetting we have Bob Bradley as our manager, the players mentioned would probably be better off playing for the United States.
You guys gonna throw a shitfit when Charlie Renken decides he’s British?

Renken said he is going to play for the U.S. but wants to help out the kids in Africa where he’s from. But I’m pretty sure the article on soccernet quotes him saying he wants to play for USA because of everything this country has made him able to do.

I love explaining to people that the two best players on the German national team are Polish.
@Lemmon- Kaman just wanted to ball, there is no way he’d make the US team. I can respect that decision somewhat. Its like a mediocre Brazilian player playing for another country. You just want to play soccer on the worlds biggest stage.
Rossi and Subotic have no such excuse.

Michel-Olivier: I’m confused as to why you think anybody here is arguing what you just stated. We know how it works. What pisses us off is that people take advantage of the rules. If player A doesn’t like the treatment he’s getting from national team A he can peace out and go to national team B. It’s an absolute joke and mockery of the system.
In regards to the rules…if you’re born in the USA and spend 10+ years in the state it is ridiculous that you would peace out on the nation that raised you. That is why Rossi is labeled a traitor.
In my mind I would not label Neven a traitor. He didn’t move to the USA until he was 10 or 11. However, in Neven’s case he capped for the USA youth teams. If you cap for one national team how can you be allowed to go to another national team…that’s ridiculous.
It’s obvious neither Rossi nor Subotic have any pride in the USA so who gives a crap about them. Good riddance.

@ marlon
klejstan have no chance, 1 his not playing in europe, 2 croatia is after cvitanich and fredes(both argentine born, both qualify through grandparents). half of croatia nt are foreign born players from austrilia, germany, swiss, bosnia….. same thing for turkey foreign born turkish players but qualify through ancestors.
@ lemmon
sorry mate, i tried getting british passport through my gr-grandfather(english), but they(you kay consulate) said no. because they said you can only get it through your parents(one of them have to hold brit nationality).
@ GS
stop crying usa is not the only country losing players go ask the aussies, cameroon, poland and senegal. at least you gain foriegn born players like adu, mastroeni, feilhaber…..

I Hate to agree with Olivier on this one, but the US has benefited from foreign players deciding to play for us.
Certainly I feel the worst for Poland. Podolski AND Klose…thats rough

Michel: I don’t understand what you’re saying in response to me. If you’re saying that Sacha Kljestan is not good enough to play for Croatia then that’s a given and essentially what I said. Or did you think I was using him as an example of a loyal American? If you’re saying he couldn’t get in on heritage, I’m pretty sure he could because his parents or grandparents were Croatian immigrants. People end up playing for national teams on shit like that all the time so I really don’t know what you’re trying to say in yoru response to me.
Kyle: The Renken thing was a joke. That said, people who are 14 have been known to change their minds about things as they get older.

@ Marlon
yes sacha is not good enough to play for croatia. the guy is playing in major league soccer. lets be honest here mls is equivalent to a european 2-3 division league(serie b, coca cola championship, championnat national). is mls a league in terms of fooball? for me no.

Good work, Marlon. The puppies thank you…but they are never truly safe…

I say it’s time we start naturalizing the best players in the world that haven’t been capped yet.
Posted from

I think that the MLS as a whole is probably a 2nd division in Europe, but I definitely think that some of the teams could play in a top division and not be Derby County.

Psuedinho give me a break you are a fuzzin Jim Thome if I ever seen one.
Posted from

Hahaha “a fuzzin Jim Thome”? What the hell does that mean? I know Mr. Thome is a fine ballplayer who once suited up for my Phillies, but you have to explain that one, Kyle.

Michel-Olivier: wtf are you talking about. Where in my post did I cry about losing players? I said good riddance. Arrogant f**k.

Rossi is from Canada…..U guys are all Confused

Play for Serbia Neven. You are a Bosnian Serb, and you have Serbian blood running through your veins, not German, Croatian, or American. If you don’t want to play for Serbia, then at least play for Bosnia, the counrty you were born in.

United States

And to add something else. Why would you guys put a “ha” next to Serbia’s name. They are way better than the US. They have world class players like Nemanja Vidic, Branislav Ivanovic, and Dejan Stankovic. They also have young talents like Miralem Sulejmani, Zdravko Kuzmanovic, and Gojko Kacar, who are all in my mind better than US talents like Bradley, Adu, and Altidore.
And by the way Sacha Kljestan is of Serbian descent not Croatian. He wouldn’t make the Serbian team anyway.

The short answer is because I felt like it. The long answer includes a disturbing scenario involving a pretzle stick and a stuffed bunny rabbit. I’ll leave it at the short version.

I’ve really nothing against Serbia, nor do I trust FIFA rankings to the slightest degree, but we are higher ranked than you guys.
A bigger issue: why are people trolling a US soccer blog as if we don’t know we’re not the shit? As far as I can tell, it’s all we talk about.

Croatia is out of the question. Neven is a serb from bosnia but his father has croatian citizenship because some of his family is from there. just wanted to clarify that in reality neven has nothing do with the croats.

LOL you guys are so funny…
Hes parents are proud serbs and he will play for Serbia !
The serbian defence would look like this very soon :
Dragutinovic(Sevilla)Vidic(Man-U)Subotic(Dortmund)Ivanovic(Chelsea)
Muhahaha
