Tuesday Night Thoughts
Just some stuff to catch up on, as we continue to wait for the roster to be known…
DaMarcus Beasley Injured Again – Oh brother. DMB picked up a hammy injury in a pre-season friendly against SC Preussen Munster. Looks like he will be out for about three weeks, which would have him missing the first leg of Champions League qualifying round dos for Rangers. The injury gods have really been raining bird doo and thumb tacks on Beas this year. Good thing it is only early in pre-season, he’ll have time to get back in the flow, no big worries yet.

Gabe Ferrari Loaned to Serie C Side Perugia – Yeah, that kid. Due to the natural humanly process of aging, Mr. Ferrari is now too old to continue playing for what the kids call the “Primavera” side for Sampdoria. Basically there aren’t any reserve divisions in Azzuri land, so he is now banished to the under world of Serie C. Actually, it’s not that bad. For instance, Luca Toni had bounced around down there before proving himself a totally incapable finisher at Euro 2008. So cheer up Gabe.
—
Freddy Adu Nearing Loan Move – The move will likely take him to Monaco as widely reported a while ago, while Italian side Geneva seem to still be in the running in one form or another. While I’m not happy about how it has come about, Freddy does need the experience. It just chaps me to the thousandth degree that Benfica continue buying midfielders this summer, shutting down any hope of Freddy even having the chance to make an impact for the club that once seemed so behind him to succeed. A billion coaching changes can do that to you I guess.
—
Reyna To Retire – I don’t really care, but I feel obliged to post for the old school Reyna die-hards (are there any left?). He is not on the US Men’s National Team anymore, and by way of observing recent form doesn’t appear to be in any future pools either. He gave it a good run, yada yada, cap space for the Red Bulls. Good on ya “Captain America”.

Thoughts on any of the above topics?

Perugia was once a stellar Seria A side, oh how the mighty have fallen. Any more news on Ferrari or videos of his play.

I could probably get away with nailing Reyna to the cross for his recent play in the Bulls – but he is more than just 16 months of drek. He was a trailblazer for the US team, opening the doors for the likes of a Gabe Ferrari or a Benny Feilhaber to get a sniff from European clubs. He has killed me as a fan of the Bulls – but I respect the hell out of him for his accomplishments internationally. Without the likes of Reyna, and McBride, Europe would still be scouring our systems for strictly goalkeepers.

How can you even say you “dont care” about Reyna retiring. He was a great player for the USA and in England, he obviously had nothing left in the tank when he came to NY. Why is it that so many soccer fans have such short term memories?

Steve – people don’t seem to remember or recognize what he did. Like I said, 16 months of garbage does not a career make. I think it also hurts him that, until about 2 years ago, Americans didnt have the outlet to see EPL or oversea games. Lots of the genius in his play came from possession, not goal scoring – another tough measure. Its alot of things.
Regardless, he was always one of my fav all time national team players (right up there with McHead) and he deserves only the best (especially after trotting on the cement that is Giant Stadiums pitch).
