Hunt For Gooch Resumes / Tomorrow’s Yanks Abroad Schedule

September 20th, 2008 | By: Carter Daly | 1 Comment »

Even with Maurice Edu’s transfer to Scottish contenders Rangers and Michael Bradley’s last minute switch to Borussia something or other (man they suck by the way); the big story of the end of the transfer window had to be the non-move of Oguchi Onyewu to a number of rumored suitors.

Well those of you who have been waiting for Gooch to really truly honestly finally make his move to a higher caliber league (which I think is all of us) can start the countdown clock, because at this point it looks like time is Gooch’s only obstacle to fleeing the Belgian Juniper League.

In this report from SI.com, it is stated that Gooch is set to reject a move to La Liga club Espanyol for another shot at the Premiership. Gooch has made his intentions to leave quite clear,

“My contract will soon end and I do not intend to sign,” he told the press. “I’ve already twice extended my contract and after five years it is time that I look elsewhere.”

Besides the Spanish club, who are said by Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws to be preparing to offer Gooch terms on a contract, Everton, Middlesbrough, and once again, Newcastle all have interest in the big American.

While it looks like summer is when we should be watching for the move, I find it hard to believe that Standard Liege wouldn’t want to cash out on such a transfer in January. Just something to think about…

While I would personally like to see Oguchi make that move to Spain, where he would be facing the quicker and craftier attackers that seem to give him problems, if the man has his heart set on fish n’ chips, bad teeth, and rain, my only advice is to avoid Newcastle at all costs. If his prior loan experience wasn’t enough to hate this idea, how bout the crisis (understatement) that club is in right now?

Also, friendly reminder…

Altidore and his Yellow Submarine take on Numancia at 11 am EST tomorrow. Should see playing time after his good performance last weekend coupled with fatigue from the Champions League draw against Manchester United. Be sure to tune it.

Adu and Monaco take on French power Marseille. If things go as they have been for Freddy, he should have about ten minutes of time on the pitch, followed by a couple prank phone calls to Jozy Altidore. Tune in for that one too I guess. One never knows when Freddy will get the call from the pine.

Enjoy.

Both Jozy and Freddy get no time this weekend. Is Freddy Adu really that bad that he can’t even get sub minutes in a scoreless game with AS Monaco??? What the heck is going on here? It would be interesting to know why he’s not playing.

Jozy on the other hand is playing for a very good La Liga team so it’s a bit more understandable that he didn’t get minutes. Plus Nihat made his return today. I forsee Jozy getting loaned out before the season is over as there just aren’t minutes for him to have, especially when Rossi and Nihat are fully fit.
