Pia’s contract extended. Ellertson performs the “dead worm.”
File this one under least shocking news announcement I’ve read in a while. Today, US Soccer announced Pia Sundhage signed a 4 year contract to continue as the head coach of the USWNT. Considering the fact that after she accepted the job on in 2007, the team won all five of the tournaments they participated in AND THEN took gold at the Olympics, I’d say this was a pretty darn good decision on Sunil Gulati’s part.
Oh, and over the weekend the team played China at the Home Depot Center, for the second to last stop of their “let me flash my gold medals in your face” tour. The US won (duh) from a Tina Ellertson goal set up by Amy Rodriguez. Perhaps the most interesting part was Ellertson’s celebration that seemed to look more like the cries of a dying turtle. From the USWNT blog:
After sliding to knock the ball into the net, Ellertson rolled on her back and did a celebration shimmy on the ground that she described as “a dead worm.”
I’m looking for a video even as I write this. But in the meantime, here’s a photo of the action from the same blog.
