Jay DeMerit: “We Were Seeing If We Could Change His Band-Aid to a Sponge Bob”
On Tuesday, June 15, United States defender Jay DeMerit called into Elliot in the Morning, a morning talk show aired locally in Washington and Richmond. Amongst other things, he discussed the England match, Tim Howard’s status, and Wayne Rooney’s temper (or lack thereof). My favorite question from the phoner: “Are all the players and coaches that end up complaining about the vuvuzelas just being pussies?” That’s some outstanding interviewing…
When asked about the upcoming Slovenia match, he noted that USA were in a different position than usual (the favorite) and that that tends to add pressure to an already stressful scenario, but that this USMNT was more capable of handling that issue than ever. “It turns into a must win game. The last thing you want to do is go in and draw as well. Yes, it still gives us a chance going into the last game, but that’s even more added pressure. And that’s the last thing we want. It’s even more important than the England game.”
And it’s probably worth noting that DeMerit agreed that the coaches and players complaining about the vuvuzelas were just being pussies. “On the field, you can’t hear the guy next to you… but neither can the other team. We’re all on an even playing field.” An even, albeit incredibly loud and annoying, playing field.
