USA vs. Algeria (1 – 0) Post-Game Thoughts

No list of notes and detractions today. I’m extremely proud of every USA player. Especially Jonathan Bornstein, who had one of the best games I’ve seen him play in a US jersey. It was a tense affair, but the USA continued to be the team with the best dramatic timing in this year’s tournament. Landon Donovan’s 91st minute winner seemed like it would never come after many good chances went begging. Luck seemed to not be on the side of the Americans. But Altidore, Donovan, and Dempsey all ran their lungs out in the goal’s creation. Michael Bradley had another great game in the midfield. Edu shielded the defense well, and Feilhaber added a nice attacking midfield option late in the game. And because of the effort of every USA player who took the field today (and even the unity and belief coming from the US bench) that 91st minute goal did come. So no big analysis today. We’re all too exhausted for that. Go have a beer. We’ll see you in the round of 16.

Wish to congratulate the USA team: I am glad in both games today better team won. Congratulations of course to the Slovenian team and Matjaz Kek as well: great team and with 4 points they will be among Top 20 of this World Cup.

I feel like we watched Altidore grow before our eyes by passing to Dempsey and NOT taking the shot.

  • strikerga

I thought Dempsey was subpar today. There were many opportunities he flubbed. Wasn't in the right place many times.

so happy the usa won and dont even want to review any of the players performance (just becouse i didint really focus with the game becouse my heart was doing leaps until this goal came so i didint get a chance to review each player)but congratulations usa

Congats from an Algeria fan – you were the better team, and I hope you go far in the competition. Great team and great coach. Dempsey really stood out for me.

    Peace out : )

That first set of 11 that was out on the field really stood out to me, with buddle coming in. Feilhaber was also extremely impressive. Bornstein might of earned a start for the next game and future matches. We should beat Ghana, they play to our strengths. Just need to withstand their early push. 2-1 USA.

Howard should be recorded for the assist. His freakin' monstrous throw from the box to Lando was awesomely precise. Go, USA!

  • JoseJosue

Awesome awesome awesome. One of THE moments of the tournament, so far.

  • Mack

The Americans were almost hosed again on a call.

There's no quit in this team that's for sure. Algeria was more than a worthy opponent in this group. Congrats USA – at least you avoided Germany by winning the group!

To be honest, if I'm USA I wouldn't fear any team in the final rounds. It's really that tight.

  • Ed

Can't stop watching the replay; the swiftness of the move alone is breathtaking, and even the forced sycophancy of Ian Darke gives me goosebumps.

It's finally one of ours, and I think that's what makes it so brilliant—that it's a huge goal in a huge match is one thing. But as an American fan of English and European football, what makes it so special is that it's not Steven Gerrard against West Ham or Andres Iniesta against Chelsea—it's Landon Donovan, one of our own, against Algeria, in a match the US absolutely needed to win, And it sends the US and its fans into delirium.

    Fantastic stuff.

Unbelievable game. Unbelievable. It was an emotional roller coaster for me, as I'm sure it was for others. I'm exhausted. And so happy and proud of the guys. LD, you did it again my friend.

  • barrilete26

What a fantastic and emotional game. I don't think I've ever celebrated a goal as much as I did with Donovans.

Jozy played great and has shown why Villareal snapped him up and Michael Bradley has been getting better with every game.

    Thank you, Landon. Thank you.

  • Denny

Delirium? That's odd. For the rest of the day, I thought I'd been sent to heaven.

Emotionally exhausting though. Landon just laces up our heart strings whenever he steps onto the field. You think they'd learn to not leave it late.

Last second Goals are so impressive, Congratulations from a Mexican fan.
GO MEXICO, GO USA, TO THE QUARTER-FINALS

I wouldn't fear the teams, I'd fear the officials taking away legitimate goals. Again.

Way to go USA! And way to Howard for getting the ball down the field so quickly!!!

  • Dar

The US deserved the top spot, since it was played the best football of any of the teams int eh group.

Plus it technically beat Slovenia 3-2 and Algeria 2-0.

I was cheering for Slovenia (my third favourite team at the World Cup) and Donovan's goal was a real heartbreak but congrats to the USA for an incredible display. They deserved to qualify yesterday, Slovenia should have won the game against you guys but the lack of experience led to the 2-2 draw.
Anyways, it's very sad not to see Slovenia take part in this competition but the US can go far. Good luck!

  • Unbelievable

Forever Burned Jonathan “Burnstein” Borenstein played exceptionally well, although there were very few runs at his side. If he were on the right, that one Algerian would've tourched him time and time again. Thank goodness for Cherundolo…

So be careful before you fall in love with Burnstein again…

That game was the most torturous game I have ever watched ever and vowed to never play again if we lost…lol

It is possible to get to the Semi-Finals. It wouldn't be truly earned in the fashion of beating a powerhouse team, but I'll take what I can get, especially given the intense interest in soccer at this moment in the USA.

football in the USA will grow when they finish with the trash Major League, League and create a decent, maybe try to participate in a Libertadores Cup or Champions league.

  • commentator01

What team besides the US can have so many bad calls go against and still show the heart necessary to the win the game, in DRAMATIC fashion no less? I say no other team. The US performances have doubled the excitement of this World Cup. So many teams have things go against them and then fall apart, whereas the US turns the game into a Hollywood production, last second victory.
