USA World Cup Roster Announcement

us-soccer-fed1Hi all. Daryl here. I’m watching ESPN Sportscenter right now and will be LiveBlogging as Bob Bradley announces his final 23 man roster for South Africa.

Please leave all and any reactions in the comments. And no booing when Brian Ching’s name is announced.

Players are lined up on the edge of a penalty area for the announcement. Like in a playground on The Bachelor.

Keepers: Brad Guzan, Marcus Hahnemann, Tim Howard

Defenders: Calos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein, Steve Cherundolo, Jay DeMerit (Watford of the EPL? ESPN fail), Clarence Goodson, Oguchi Onyewu (and beard), Jonathan Spector.

Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Stuart Holden, Jose Francisco Torres.

Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Edson Buddle, Robbie Findley, Herculez Gomez.

No Brian Ching. I kid you not.

Guys that were cut: Heath Pearce, Chad Marshall, Alejandro Bedoya, Sacha Kljestan, Robbie Rogers, Brian Ching, Eddie Johnson.

Official USSoccer link to prove I’m not making this up. Plus, post-announcement quote from Bob Bradley:

“We have been working for almost four years to reach this point, and we are grateful to all the players who have been part of the process. There is a tremendous amount of respect for the efforts and professionalism that everyone has put into building this team,” said Bradley. “It’s important in any team building process to get to the final 23, and clearly there were some tough decisions to make. We are confident that this is a group of players that will work together and be committed to doing whatever it takes to be successful. We feel the roster has a good balance of players who have been a part of previous World Cups, those who have gained great experience in qualifying and Confederations Cup and some newer faces that have proved they belong. We are extremely excited to play the final Send-Off match in Philadelphia and then begin the great challenge of playing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.”

    Findley? Really?

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Daryl

Yep, Findley. I'm amazed at that. I know Ching isn't the most popular player, but he surely offers so much more than Robbie Findley.

  • Stefan

I am surprised if you weren't going to bring Ching it wasn't Gomez. Additionally, I was hoping for Bedoya. I had forgotten about Feilhaber.

  • http://hamburg.theoffside.com Chris

Both Stefans beat me to it.

    Robbie Findley? Seriously?

  • Rebecca

What has Benny done recently? I still don't get it.

  • GS

Stefan…same reaction. Findley is garbage. Way to waste a roster spot! I'll gladly eat crow if i'm wrong but I don't think I am.

  • http://usa.worldcupblog.org Denny

    Findley?!?!

  • Stefan

I like how we still haven't solved our left back problem in 4 years. That's totally awesome. I think it will be Bocanegra. Maybe Bradley thought Gomez had shown him up or something. It's the only explanation.

  • Laura

Anyone have the list of seven that were cut from the final roster?

  • Patrick

Robbie Findlay, what does Bob see in this guy? Unless Ching was injured post game or something, that pick makes zero sense. I had Bedoya over Torres in my blog, I thought I saw more out of Bedoya though the rest of the internet disagreed with me, oh well. Torres wasn't bad, I just thought Bedoya had a better game, nevertheless, Torres can be valuable. Thus Findlay is the only pick I really tale exception with. My anger will dull as long as Gomez starts up top with Altidore and Findlay only sees the field in case of injury.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Daryl

Will add those seven names to the post now Laura.

  • MennoDaddy

Amazing. I'm surely no fan of Ching, but he was one of the few bright(er) spots in last night's second half. And Findley? Bwah?

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Daryl

Names added to post, but I'll paste them here too…

The seven guys that were cut: Heath Pearce, Chad Marshall, Alejandro Bedoya, Sacha Kljestan, Robbie Rogers, Brian Ching, Eddie Johnson.

  • http://usa.worldcupblog.org Denny

Any news about announcing the reserve list? Surely Ching will be on that.

  • http://usa.worldcupblog.org Marlon

I'm a very big Brian Ching detractor, but I have to admit I'd have taken him over Findley. I'm surprised given how much Bob Bradley seems to love Ching's play. Maybe he feels that Altidore and Buddle are both good enough at holding the ball up and better threats facing goal?

  • Mike

I think BB really misses the speed of Davies and Findley is the closest thing we have to Davies up top. I can't see Findley ever starting but if we find ourselves behind with about 20-30 min. to go, I can see Findley coming in to stretch the field. Ching is good with his back to goal but doesn't operate well in space. I know we have issues in the back (I don't even want to get started on Onyewu) but for years leading up to this World Cup my greatest fear was watching Mike Bradley and Ricardo Clark run the midfield. I told myself that if that's our starting midfield in the WC, we're doomed. Bradley is neither quick nor fast. While his distribution has gotten somewhat better it was not good to begin with. He gets called for a lot of fouls because he's constantly out of position and not quick enough to get back into position. As for Clark, he consistently gives up possession and his distribution skills are atrocious. Honestly, I hope they prove me wrong, but I've seen it too many times. If they can pair somebody else with Bradley (Edu maybe?) maybe the result will be different. I just hope the US shows better than last WC and gets out of the group. Regardless, I'm red, white and blue, through and through.

  • http://usa.worldcupblog.org Marlon

Daryl to have anything to say for Hahnemann's sunglasses?

  • http://usa.worldcupblog.org Denny

That's funny, considering Buddle played with his back to the goal most of the game, and Ching was the one who drove many attacks facing the goal. I just don't know how a Jozy and Buddle partnership would work. Ching at least usually drops back allowing Jozy to roam up top, but Buddle seemed lost and confused when fighting EJ for his spot.

It's clear that Gomez is the first choice sub now, and it's debatable if Findley will even see minutes. But at least we've seen Ching earn his caps.

    Really, what is Bob thinking…

  • charlie

i think that dempsey needs to be pushed up top against england given the lack of experience of our forwards. their defense will be far too strong for the likes of buddle and gomez to deal with. what are your thoughts on the possibility of this?

  • codyintl

Reserve list? Do you mean if somebody gets injured of the 23? No list will be made for that. Otherwise the reserves are already named… thats why there are 23 players…
starting 11, the subs , the rest reserves.

  • http://usa.worldcupblog.org Denny

Sorry, I meant like for an emergency injury. Some other countries have made public lists just to let non-called up players feel better. I don't think the team would need a late call up unless many players got injured. But I was just curious.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Daryl

I'm going to assume they're designed to prevent exposure to equine nasal mucus:

  • sssith

    Amen.

Gods this drives me nuts. We are going to get eaten alive if we can't figure out the left full.

  • Zac

The back line has always been my concern. Last night's performance just made me more worried. Bornstein has proven time and again that he can't defend at the international level. I know taking only 6 defenders is a risk, but I would have preferred to see Robbie Rodgers go as you have to take your best players. Rodgers has shown much more at the international level than Bornstein.

Findley was picked purely for his speed, but I doubt he'll play. Against England I imagine that BB will start with a 4-5-1 formation with Altidore up top and Dempsey playing a withdrawn forward role. If we are going to play with 2 forwards with this line up, I'd prefer to see Holden play in the midfield and Donovan play off Altidore.

This is the World Cup. Findley and Buddle may have had some success in the MLS, but they won't do much against top international defenses. Gomez is a wild card, but he's young and you can't expect much from him.

If we are going to make it out of our group, Donovan and Dempsey are going have to lead our attack and Howard is going to have to play out of his mind (like Friedel in 2002).

  • Alejandro

Bedoya should have gone over Bornstein and Ching over Findley.

Why the f*#k does Bornstein make the squad every time??? After watching him play in games against quality teams, he has shown that he is a huge liability. I get the impression that Bob Bradley would rather have someone that trains really well, than someone who actually has the talent to compete against quality teams. If he gets any playing time in SA, I hope Bornstein proves me wrong.

  • sscouser

Oguchi Onyewu? I hope Crouch and Rooney watched yesterday's U.S. friendly.

  • Johnny

I heard on a later Bradley press conference that Ching might've still had some outstanding injury woes.

  • Still optimistic…

I agree. Rogers has looked great every time I've seen him play. Fast, aggressive… What am I missing?

Don't freak out about Bornstein, folks. Assuming Gooch, Bocanegra, and DeMeritt are good to go, Bradley has several other choices. If they aren't healthy, well… we weren't gonna win it this year anyway!

  • Paul

Denny, with 11 men on the field and 3 substitutes max per game, 23 is all that you are allowed to use throughout the entire world cup. With the 30 man roster, the other 7 guys know that they are close to national team material.

  • Albert

Findley kind of sucks. I would take a not fully fit Charlie Davies over him.

  • Rod

If anyone saw the match against Czech Rep. last night, it makes absolutely no sense that Bornstein is going to the World Cup. E. Johnson scored so many important goals for the US in World Cup qualifying that it doesn't make much sense not to include him (good play in MLS does not equate with experience scoring international goals). And including Findley over Ching does not make much sense either, seeing that Ching would be a great player to set up Altidore, Gomez, or Dempsey.

  • jaderise

Don't count out the MLS players. 2 clear benefits for them (1) they are just getting into the swing of their season and (2) they are much more fresh than their European counterparts. Speed and fresh legs can create a lot positives for the US.

The benefit this time around is the experience on the team that is already playing at a high level and have played meaningful games in the past 4 years. The team leaders will help get the tactics right on field and calm the emotions.

  • jimbo

everyones hating on findley…they picked him for his pace to replace davies, its not that bad of a pick, if anyone forward got snubbed it was eddie johnson, who i wanted to make it

and robbie rogers shouldve made it but i knew he probably wouldnt….

guy hating on our CMs:wtf? michael bradley is one of the few players we have that can hold his own against the best in the world and ricardo clark is decent, more skilled than people think, good at doing the unnoticed dirty work, hes underrated, edu will prob start anyway though, and torres and holden are also pretty good

  • Create11

sorry a bit behind where is freddie adu
