Yanks Abroad: April 4
Every Monday, I’ll be posting how Americans did in matches over the weekend.
GOALKEEPERS:
-Tim Howard played the full 90 in Everton’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa. With the draw, Everton climbed to their highest position in the league this season. Brad Guzan played the full 90 in Hull City’s 1-0 lost against Millwall.
DEFENDERS:
-Carlos Bocanegra and Steve Cherundolo played the full 90 in their club’s matches. Bocanegra had an ok game, but didn’t play as bad as he did in the recent friendlies. Cherundolo played right-back in a 4-1 lost to Borussia Dortmmund, The loss has killed Hanover’s chances of making the Champions League.
MIDFIELDERS:
Clint Dempsey played the full 90 in Fulham’s 3-0 win over Blackpool. Dempsey has 10 goals in the league and almost made it 11 when he headed a free kick that hit the post. Dempsey has the most goals ever in the EPL for an American. Maurice Edu played the full 90 in Rangers 3-2 loss to Dundee United. Jermaine Jones played 89 minutes of Blackburn’s 0-0 draw at Arsenal.
FORWARDS:
Jozy Altidore played 4 minutes in Bursapor’s 0-0 draw at Fenerbahce. Here’s an interesting stat. In 41 apperances in European League games, Altidore has only scorced twice. Altidore is not going to get any better from siting on the bench. Edson Buddle played 66 minutes in Ingolstadt’s 2-1 win at Energie Cottbus. Freddy Adu played 32 minutues in Rizespor’s 3-0 loss at Mersin Idmanyurdu.
Players That Didn’t Play:
Ouchi Onyewu, Jonathan Bornstein, Timothy Chandler (red-card), Michael Bradley, Sacha Kljestan, DaMarcus Beasley, Herculez Gomez
Again, this is the new piece. I hope to cover more US players overseas as time goes on.
