U-20 News Droplets
The U-20’s are picking up serious steam as they head into the youth world cup hosted by our neighbors to the north.
First was the friendly against Chile in Giants Stadium, a 2-1 victory lead by goals from Freddy and Robbie Rogers.
More recentley was the 4-0 drubbing of New Zealend in a closed door scrimmage. Goals came from Sampdoria and former Red Bull youth team product Gabriel Ferrari, as well as Freddy Adu, Danny Szetela, and Michael Bradley. Highlites are up on ussoccer.com now.
Even with the win, the US squad was dealt a huge blow losing track star Johan Smith to what was first thought to be a bad ankle sprain and now looks like ligament damage. Replacing Smith will be Hamburg, or Hamburger as I recentley learned, SV player Preston Zimmerman. You can read the full report on the situation here.
This is a bad break for Smith as he was looking to be a key force up and down the wing as well as up top for the squad. This should open up more of a chance for Gabe Ferrari to get some more action up top.

One of the big stories heading into this Youth World Cup are the amounts of players from the yank’s squad drawing supposed interest from squads across the Atlantic.
This report from MLSU states that Danny Szetela is getting a look from Everton. But there is more in the comments section, where a poster claims to have sat next to Ives Garlcep on the plane home from chi town for the Gold Cup. Ives supposedly told him that Freddy is drawing interest from Lyon and Valencia. The poster goes on to say that he has a connection with Nate Sturgis’ father, who claims that Nate is drawing a look from FC Strasbourg. Obviously not the most reputable source for these last tidbits, but interesting to hear nonetheless.
What are your thoughts on the youngins and which club would you like to see them go to abroad?

This tournament is why our Copa America team is closer to a “C” team than to a “B” team.
If you’re a talented American teenager, you’re playing in Canada right now, not in Venezuala.
I’m still hopeful we can be one of the two best 3rd place teams, however.
I think we can get a point from Paraguay, and I think we can get 3 points from Colombia.
And if Peru can spank Uruguay 3-0, then it’s not impossible to believe we can get a point from Argentina.
But 5 points would likely allow us to finish 2nd in the group, and we don’t want that. No, 3rd place would be better, because the 2nd place team from Group C will likely face Brazil in the knock-out round, while the 3rd place team from Group C has a good chance of getting matched up with the Group A winner. Group A looks very weak.
